Rabbi Yosef Breier — Life and Legacy:
The distinguished and pious Rabbi Yosef Breuer (1894–1980), son of Rabbi Mordechai Dov, Av Beit Din of Ștefănești, initially served as a shochet and later became the rabbi of Bivolari, near Iași. After his father’s passing, he was called to Ștefănești to succeed him. He spent nine months in Vișeu de Sus where he studied in partnership with the Av Beit Din, Rebbi Menachem Mendel Hager, forming a close lifelong friendship.
Rabbi Yosef Breuer was among the prominent disciples of the holy Rebbe Avraham Mattisyahu of Ștefănești. In his memory, Rabbi Breuer established a yeshiva in the city following the Rebbe’s passing. Among his students was the saintly Rebbi Chaim Zanvil Abramowitz of Ribnitza. By the directive of their teacher, the holy Rebbe of Ștefănești, Rabbi Breier and Rabbi Abramowitz set aside two hours every night to study Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah, and Choshen Mishpat together. After nearly thirty years, when the Ribnitzer Rebbe immigrated to Israel and reunited with Rabbi Yosef, Rabbi Breuer recited the blessing of Shehecheyanu! (As told by his son, Rabbi Menachem Breuer, father of the current Boyan Rebbe).
After World War II, Rabbi Breuer served as the rabbi of Botoșani. In 1947, he moved to the United States, where he served as a rabbi in New York. In 1964, he immigrated to Israel. His son, Rebbi Menachem Mendel Breyer, was the father of the current Boyan Rebbe Shlit”a.
Most of Rabbi Yosef Breuer’s writings were lost during the Holocaust.
