A Most Rare and Unknown Letter, Entirely in the Holy Handwriting and Signature of the Rebbe. Mazel Tov and Blessings in the Name of His Holy Father.

Belz, Ca 1910.

As is well known, letters in the holy handwriting and signature of the Rebbe from "Belz in Der Heim" are exceedingly rare! Even more so when entirely in his handwriting.

"B”h, here in Belz, may it be established for eternity."

To my dear and esteemed friend & relative, distinguished in piety, honored in the holy community, God-fearing Moreinu Harav Binyamin Shlit”a

I send you my regards and wish to inform you that I have duly received your letter. I hereby notify you that it has been delivered into the hands of my honored and holy father, may he be well. In accordance with his pure blessing, may the Almighty help you to raise [your children] with all good things until their proper establishment, with all forms of satisfaction.

Nothing more to add, only life and peace from me, your relative, blessing you with all good,

Hakatan Aharon, son of the Rebbi Shlit”a of Belz”.

Regarding this letter, the pious Chassid R. Yisrael Yakar Bigelaisen writes in his journal about the first time he ascended to the Land of Israel to be in the holy presence of Maran Rabbi Aharon: "I mentioned that he sits and diligently studies Torah despite his weakness, and I recounted that he showed me a letter that Maran Rabbi Aharon had written to him in the 1910s. I also told Maran that when the Sanzer Rebbe was ill, he merited to see Maran Rabbi Yissachar Dov of Belz, of blessed memory, in a dream and pleaded with him for mercy. Maran listened to my words and responded in his holy tongue, ‘I know him very well.’”

The famous Holy Maran Rebbe Aharon Rokeach of Belz (1880-1957), son of Rebbe Yissaschar Dov and grandson of Rebbe Yehoshua of Belz, was renowned as a holy man and miracle worker, who was called "Aharon, G-d’s holy one". He was among the leaders of European Jewry before the Holocaust, as well as a rebuilder of Torah and Chassidut after the war. His ascetic lifestyle and obvious holiness caused thousands of followers to flock to his court for blessings and advice.

Rebbe Aharon was crowned as leader of the Belz Chassidut in 1927, and became one of the foremost leaders of Eastern European Jewry. As such, he was especially targeted by the Nazis during the Holocaust. His followers smuggled him from ghetto to ghetto, until he managed to escape to Budapest, Hungary, from where he made his way to Eretz Israel on a difficult journey that spanned Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and Syria. His wife, children, grandchildren and entire extended family were killed by the Nazis, and he arrived in Eretz Israel accompanied only by his brother, Rebbe Mordechai of Bilgoraj, who also lost his entire family (R. Mordechai’s son, Rebbe Yissaschar Dov, born of his second marriage in Eretz Israel, is the current Belzer Rebbe). Rebbe Aharon settled in Tel Aviv, where he began to rebuild the shattered remnants of his chassidut.
