The Lubavitcher Rebbe was accustomed to giving out coins to his Chassidim either on his way to Daven Shacharit at 770, on the way to the Mikveh in the morning, after the Shacharit Prayers when the Rebbe would be on his way to visit the Ohel.

There would be other occasions where the rebbe would give out coins for charity such as, rallies that the were held for children, for older people , for Shluchim and other various Lubavitch organizational rallies which would be held at 770.

These rallies would be attended by the Lubavitcher Rebbe where he would give sermons and inspiration as well as give out coins to be placed into Tzedakah.

This coin was received from the Lubavitcher Rebbe on one of these occasions, as R’ Chaim Tzvi Konikov writes on the tissue he folded the coin into:

"This Nickel I received from the Holy Hands of his Honor and Holiness the Admo"r Shlit"a on the 13th day of Shvat, 5745, on the second day of the week of Parshat Yisro – Veata Techezeh –  before he was to leave for the Ohel at 2:45pm, in the year 5745,( the exchange of the coin to be placed into Tzedakah). "

Provenance: R’ Chaim Tzvi Konikov.
