This handmade silver-plated charity container by S. Ohana, crafted in 1982 in Mea Shearim, Jerusalem, is an exquisite work of Judaica that seamlessly blends artistry and devotion. Designed to resemble a traditional house or synagogue, the container is imbued with intricate details and rich symbolism, making it a truly captivating piece.
The walls of the "house" are adorned with lifelike brick patterns, creating a sense of architectural realism. The front features beautifully styled Hebrew words: "מתן בסתר ירפה אף", meticulously crafted. On either side, Star of David windows are elegantly integrated into the brick motif, and below the windows, two guardrails frame and protect the Luchot HaBrit (Tablets of the Law), which prominently display the Ten Commandments in stunning relief.
The roof is a masterpiece in itself, with old-style semi-round shingles engraved with additional Hebrew words: "צדקה תציל ממות". Atop the chimney, an engraved, antique-style menorah serves as both an ornamental feature and the slot for inserting coins for Tzedakah (charity), combining function with symbolism.
At the back, a gracefully curved handle is adorned with stylishly engraved Hebrew words: "פותח את ידך", ensuring the piece is both practical and decorative. The container rests on a platform decorated with foliate patterns and is supported by four bell-shaped feet, adding an additional layer of artistry and stability to the design.
