Prussian Jewish-Christian Silver Calendar Medal. 1804.
”Kalendermedaille’ struck & signed by Daniel Friedrich Loos.
Obverse: Central sunburst device with dates, surrounded by three additional rings & calendar. Of interest are the references & dates for Jewish Festivals: Judischen Ostern, Zerstorung Jerusalems (Ninth of Av), Versohnung (Yom Kippur), and lauberhut (Sukoth).
Reverse: Intricate calendar with symbols of moon phases, seasonal dates at top ans birth dates of Prussia’s royal family (Friedrich Wilhelm III) below.
Jewish calendar medals such as this are well documented for the years 1804-1805 specifically in Hamburg where the Jewish merchant-class were highly regarded.
However this type of medal emanating from Prussia is exceptionally scarce, especially in silver.
Jewish calendar medals in Prussia are almost unknown and may have been issued in appreciation for the King’s predecessor, Friedrich Wilhelm II, who instituted a series of reforms granting the Jews greater rights.
