Machzor according to Ashkenazi customs for the High Holidays and the Three Pilgrimage Festivals, with a lengthy commentary and the laws of Hadrat Kodesh.
Amsterdam, 1708. Printed by Shlomo Proops. Illustrated miniatures made of woodcuts of the twelve zodiac signs set against the backdrop of various fieldwork scenes.
The Machzor is adorned with hundreds of handwritten annotations in ancient Ashkenazi script, including the customs of the Frankfurt am Main community, variations in textual versions, prayer intentions, and interpretations of the piyyutim.
All in a beautiful and legible handwriting. On page 91, it is explicitly noted, "In the holy community of Frankfurt, Yizkor is recited, " and similarly, "In the holy community of Frankfurt, they do not say [certain prayers], " on page 93, "In Frankfurt, the *shamash* reads, " and on page 100, "In Frankfurt, these verses are not said."
From the abundance of annotations, it appears that the writer was a learned scholar, a proofreader, and a meticulous person who prepared the Machzor especially for the Frankfurt community and those who follow its customs. Some of the annotations are partially cut in the margin.
