A Galician Silver Spice Container belonging to R’ Shlomo Drimmer

Spice container is pear-shaped in its upper half adorned with lovely engraved floral and foliate motifs. A flower finial is affixed to the to the top of the container while its stem is made of three scaled snake stems with their heads bowed to the center. The stems rest on the petals of a daisy applied to a circular band with the original owners name, "Shlomo Drimmer, Yerushalayim Tibaneh Vetikonein (Abbreviated meaning may it be [re]built and [re]established. Regarding the Holy Land, and Jerusalem in particular) engraved on its outer surface.

The year 1830 was the beginning of what might be termed Skala’s rabbinic dynasty, when R’ Shlomo Drimmer became rabbi of Skala’s Jewish community. As sons succeeded their fathers, Rabbi Drimmer’s descendants were to serve as the town’s religious leaders for the next 112 years, until the destruction of Skala’s Jewish community in 1942.

The 19th century Rabbi Shlomo Drimmer was a respected scholar who wrote the treatises Beth Shlomo and Shoresh Yaakov.

R’ Shlomo’s Descendant- Mr Drimmer added a  round silver dedication plaque to the underside of the base identifying his holy ancestor to whom this spice container was originally used.

The Ga’on and Chassid Rabbi Shlomo Drimmer (1800-1873), disciple of the Rebbe of Buchach, author of ‘Da’at Kedoshim’. Son-in-law of Rabbi Moshe Menachem Mendel, disciple of the ‘Ohev Yisrael of Apta’

He served in the Skola (Galicia) Rabbinate for approximately forty years. Among the greatest Hassidim of Ruzhin, replied to questions presented before him and arranged the marriage ceremony at the weddings of Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin’s children [who would meet him prior to the Chuppah and inform him of matters to have in mind while performing the marriage ceremony]. The Rebbe Rabbi Chaim of Kosov remarked that he responded according to Halachah in his replies and blessed him that his books would be accepted throughout the Jewish nation.
