A warm letter of recommendation for a groom, handwritten 6 lines and signed by Maran Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky, the holy Steipler. Attached to a longer letter from the Gaon Rabbi Moshe Hebroni, Rosh Yeshiva of Chevron.
24 Menachem Av, 1968.
Maran Hagaon Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky- the Steipler [1899–1985], author of "Kehillos Yaakov, " was a prominent Torah scholar and one of the foremost rabbinic figures of his time. He was the brother-in-law of the Chazon Ish and served as one of the leading heads of the "Novardok-Beit Yosef" yeshiva both abroad and in Bnei Brak. Already in his youth, he was renowned throughout the Lithuanian yeshiva world for his remarkable diligence, Torah scholarship, and holiness. His nickname "the Steipler" came from his birthplace, Horonostaypol in Ukraine. He authored the Kehillos Yaakov series, a monumental work on various topics and tractates of the Talmud. He was known as a man of wonders, possessed of divine inspiration, and many sought his blessings and counsel, placing great weight on his words. After the passing of his brother-in-law, the Chazon Ish, people from all over Israel flocked to him for blessings and salvations, which were known to bear fruit.
It is important to note that the Steipler fiercely opposed the attribution of "divine inspiration" or "blessing power" to him. However, as the great Rabbi Moshe Soloveitchik explained, quoting the Talmudic teaching that Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa was like a servant before God and was therefore answered: "I have the feeling that the Steipler in our generation is like a servant before God. He was not tied to any rabbinic position, nor did he have a specific role limited to the needs of a community, unlike most rabbis. The Steipler was solely dedicated to learning Torah and acting on behalf of the entire environment, and therefore, like Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa, he was answered by Heaven" ("Haish Moshe, " vol. 1, p. 98).
The Gaon Rabbi Avraham Moshe Hebroni [1905-1975], son-in-law of Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein the head of the Slabodka yeshiva, was one of the prominent Rosh Yeshivas in Israel. He served as the Rosh Yeshiva of Hebron and was a member of the Council of Torah Sages. In his youth, he studied under the Chafetz Chaim at the Radin yeshiva.
