The GHoly Gaon & Tzadik Rabbi Shaul Yechezkel Greenfeld was born in 1794 in Uhel to Rabbi Avraham Shlomo Greenfeld, who was the head of the rabbinical court of the town, and to Sarah Lifsha, daughter of Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel, a great-grandson of Rabbi Heschel of Krakow. He studied in the yeshiva of the Chatam Sofer in Pressburg, who called him “my remarkable and diligent student, Rabbi Shaul.” After several years, he returned to Uhel. During this period, Rebbi Moshe Teitelbaum, author of Yismach Moshe, moved to the town, and Rabbi Shaul became his devoted student. He was also a student of Rebbi Naftali of Ropshitz and a close study companion of Rebbi Chaim of Sanz.
In 1813, he married Malka, daughter of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Zavdika, a descendant of the Baal Shem Tov. Immediately after his marriage, he was granted rabbinic ordination by the Yismach Moshe, reportedly the only such ordination he gave. He was sent by his teacher, the Chatam Sofer, to reconcile with Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum, following rumors that the Chatam Sofer had spoken negatively about the Hasidic practices of the Yismach Moshe.
In 1818, he moved to Litshik (Luchki), where he acquired an estate with a tavern, assisted by Rabbi Zvi Heller, the rabbi of Ungvar. In Litshik, he worked extensively to strengthen religious life and established a Talmud Torah. He also wrote many innovations on the Talmud, although these were eventually lost.
He passed away on Purim in 1849 and was buried in Michalovce, Slovakia. For an extensive biography, see The Life History of Magen Shaul (Brooklyn, 2016).
