Rabbi Yaakov HaLevi Shapira, Av Beit Din of Tarcal was born in Rimanov (or Lodamir) in 1829.
He was a renowned Torah giant among his generation and part of the sacred circle of the holy Maran Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, his appointment as Av Beit Din of Tertzal in 1870 was by the directive of the Divrei Chaim. He was known for his piety, delving deeply into Jewish law, and many times when questions arose in the home of Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, he would direct them to Rabbi Shapira of Tarcal. (See Sha’ar Yissachar by the holy Rebbi of Munkatch, who tells of an insightful interpretation from Rabbi Shapira on the poem "Echad Mi Yodea, " recited at the Passover seder table of Rebbi Chaim of Sanz in his last year, and praised by the great Rebbi Yechezkel and Rabbi Shlomo of Munkatch). Rebbi Chaim of Sanz once sent him on a mission to Maran the Sar Shalom of Belz.
The holy Rebbi Yeshaya of Kerestir, near Tarcal held Rabbi Shapira in high esteem, accompanying him to the train station after his visits. The holy Rebbi of Kerestir also honored him as the sandek for one of his children.
Rabbi Yaakov Shapira had distinguished and holy practices. He wore a bekishe and white stockings on weekdays, like the great Rebbes of his time. He passed away on the 4th of Cheshvanm1905, and a Ohel was built over his grave. His son-in-law and successor was Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Rosner.
