Signature of Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Zalman Ostreicher, Dayan of Munkács, and his father-in-law, the distinguished Reb Yosef Ornstein. Tosafot Shabbat with Mahadura Batra, First Edition, Zolkiew 1806.

Sefer Tosafot Shabbat with Mahadura Batra—a work on the Shulchan Aruch and Rema regarding the laws of Shabbat by Rabbi Raphael ben Chaim Meisels, . This is one of the foundational works on the laws of Shabbat.

First edition of the Mahadura Batra. Zolkiew, 1806. With important approbations by the Gaonim: Rabbi Yaakov Ornstein, Av Beit Din of Lviv; Rabbi Meir Kristianpoller, Av Beit Din of Brody; Rabbi Betzalel ben Meir Margaliot, Av Beit Din of Ostroh; and Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margaliot of Brody.

At the top of the title page is the signature of the holy Gaon Rabbi Yosef [Shlomo] Zalman Estreicher (Ostreicher), son of Rabbi Eliezer and grandson of Rabbi Meir Leib Estreicher, Av Beit Din of Karoly. The inscription reads: "Given to me by the above, Hakatan Yosef Zalman Estreicher."

Next to his signature is the signature of his father-in-law, the distinguished Reb Yosef Ornstein from Munkács.

Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Zalman was one of the first students of the Chatam Sofer. After his marriage (prior to 1811), he lived in Munkács and is mentioned several times in the responsa of his teacher, the Chatam Sofer.

In 1825, when Rebbi Tzvi Elimelech of Dinov (author of Bnei Yissaschar) was appointed as Av Beit Din of Munkács, Rabbi Yosef stood by his side and was greatly esteemed by him. Rebbi Tzvi Elimelech referred to him with praise in Takanot Tmichin Deoraita:  The esteemed rabbinic scholar, exceptional in Torah and pleasant character, famed for his good name, our honored Yosef Shlomo Zalman, who has committed his heart and spirit to perform mitzvot as one of the members of the holy group. May it be the will of the Creator to crown him with the blessing of wealth, and may his house be a gathering place for sages, blessed with descendants engaged in Torah and mitzvot, who will rejoice in love when the Congregation of Israel is united with her Beloved speedily in our days, amen."

In the years following, Rabbi Yosef Zalman was appointed as Dayan in Munkács (at least from 1842), a position he held until his passing. He served during the tenure of Rabbi Azriel Green (one of the "holy company" of the Chozeh of Lublin and author of Nachalat Azriel on the Torah), as well as under Rabbi Ephraim Fischel Horowitz (a nephew of the holy Rebbe of Ropshitz), who served as Av Beit Din from approximately 1843 until his passing on the 18th of Kislev, 1861.

Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Zalman passed away on the 5th of Elul, 1850, and was laid to rest in the ancient cemetery of Munkács. His tombstone bears the following inscription:

"Angels of heaven came to greet you, the fifth of Elul in the year of your remembrance. A sign and a memorial for generations, a keeper of integrity in whose place rests the crown of Munkács, a family that departed with one outstanding in many virtues, his hand prevailing over all, and the fire of the Sinai Torah blazing in his heart. Trusting fully, even in his absence, is the honorable and beloved rabbi, diligent and sharp, proficient and poetic, Rabbi Yosef Shlomo, son of Rabbi Eliezer, an honored gem of the Estreicher family. May his soul be bound in the bond of life."
