Entirely carved by hand, this Decalogue would have been placed over the ark in an American synagogue. The scroll-work and feathers are strikingly similar to 19th century carved wooden "American Eagle" plaques that were patriotic in nature, which are highly collectible today by American Folk Art enthusiasts, including museums.
The quality of the engraved Hebrew lettering on this Decalogue is exceptional. This may be an important piece of Jewish Americana dating to the 19th or very early 20th century.
