Born in Izmir, Rabbi Yisrael Moshe Hazan (1808-62) was raised in Jerusalem. He held rabbinic posts in Rome, Corfu and Alexandria. Hazan fought against the Reform movement in Italy, while also arguing against the retention of superstitious practices within the traditional community.
