This cigarette lighter is a rare relic of the Lodz Ghetto. Ingeniously crafted for its time and made to look like a casing for a prayer book. Lighter is made of nickel and swings open to reveal a flint wheel and protruding wick.
The inscription on the lighter in German reads: " Most cordial congratulations on your fifty third birthday" and signed "Adek, " "Litzm. Ghetto 15.III.43."
The edge of the lighter is engraved with the Hebrew year 1943 and a Star of David.
The lighter gives us a glimpse into the personal life of a particular inhabitant of the Lodz Ghetto.
4.2cm. x 3.2cm.
Literature taken from the book "Jewish Antiques" , "From Menorahs to Seltzer Bottles" by Tzadik Kaplan.
