Torah shield, Maker: Unidentified, N, for Nuremberg, early 19th century.


Torah shield is elegantly decorated with two attached roman columns on tall circular bases surmounted with applied chased rampant lions. Columns are flanking a septennial luminous candelabra sprouting from a sunflower in a repoussé fashion. The word Shabbat encircled by a protruding foliate scrolled border are etched and chased under the center motif. Hung beneath with three bells on the lower part of the backplate whilst at top is a fourth large swinging bell. Three linked chains are attached to the sides and top of the backplate which were made to hang the shield from a Torah scroll on holidays and throughout the year.


Finials (Rimmonim in Hebrew) are set on a cylindrical pipe stem applied to a two tiered baluster upper section with domed top. Gadroon design leading into circular and bead scrolling at bottom pierced with six mihrabs hung with bells and chased floral motifs. Top domes have harmonious gadroon designs with pierced floral and foliate repoussé chasings surmounted by rampant lions with extended paws clutching an oval shaped tablet engraved with a dedication.


Shield is marked at base of columns and on lower part of the backplate.

Shield: Overall Great condition, light scratches, lower part of columns slightly bent, two small holes at top of backplate where there was an ornament attached (maybe a crown) which encompassed the bell is missing.


Finials: Good-Fair condition, crude soldering repairs in a few places and lead soldering on the top part of one stem, one of the rampant lions at top of one finial has been made and added later.
