When the matza-baking machine was invented in 1856, a major dispute arose between the rabbis of the time over whether or not it may be used – the Ktav Sofer and the Sho’el U-Meshiv permitted and even encouraged use of the machine, whereas Rabbi Shlomo Kluger, the Rebbe of Sanz – “Divrei Hayim” and others were strongly opposed to it. After they published the pamphlet ”Moda’a Le-Beit Yisrael”
the Sho’el U-Meshiv countered with a pamphlet titled ”Bitul Moda’a”. The dispute flamed all the Jewish communities. (See more about dispute in “Hayu Mesaprim”, pg. 188-231).

The Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Kluger (1785-1869) was one of the greatest rabbis in the era of the Achronim, and served as Rav and Maggid in Brody for close to 50 years. He was one of the most prolific authors of Torah scholarship and wrote over 150 Torah works. Among his works are Chochmas Shlomo on Shulchan Aruch, Sefer Hachaim, Mei Nida, Nidrei Zrizin, Shu”t Tuv Taam V’da’as, Avodas Avodah, Shu”t HaElef Lecha Shlomo, and many others.
The holy tzaddik Rabbi Meir Premishlan expressed his admiration by saying: “Meir (referring to himself) sees in the heavens that they rule in the Heavenly Mesivta just like Rabbi Shlomo rules on the earth.”
The esteemed Gaon Rabbi Avraham Benjamin Kluger of Brody (1841-1916), was the only son of the renowned Gaon of Galicia, Rabbi Shlomo Kluger of Brody. He primarily acquired his Torah knowledge from his father, who mentioned his queries from a young age in his Sefer "Milei D\'Nizikin." He was chosen for the rabbinate in Zalkova as the candidate of the Chassidim. He was an outstanding scholar and one of the leaders of the Jewish community in Galicia. He corresponded with other rabbis of his generation. He authored the responsa "Sha\'arei Binyamin" (Budapest, 1933). During World War I, he emigrated to Budapest.
