The Holy Gaon Tzadik Rabbi Yehoshua Zvi Michal Shapira [Rabbi Hirsch Michal 1840-1906] , one of the exemplary figures of the old Yishuv in the 19th century. Born in Hebron to Rizha Golda and Rabbi Ya’akov Kapil Shapira, he was a grandson of Rabbi Ze’ev Shapira, nicknamed Rabbi Ze’ev Harif. He became famous as a holy man and exemplary. All his life he lived in celibacy, and even when he was weakened and forced to sleep, he did not sleep on a bed but on a mat that was spread out on the floor. for years he would go to hiding places every night in Jerusalem, where he would study Torah and prayer, and at midnight he used to say midnight Tikun.
Since he was young he set his place of study in the "Ahali Ya’akov" Beit Midrash, where they regularly studied in the great cities of Jerusalem, including Rabbi Meir Auerbach of Kalish, Rabbi Nachum from shadik and Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Leib Silberberg of Kutna, the "Zait Ra’anan". Over the years, Rabbi Hirsch Michal approached the "Zeit Ra’anan" and he became his prominent disciple Rabbi Zilberberg reconized his greatness and befriended him him, and as Rabbi Hirsch Michal himself testified in one of his letters to his grandson: "Almost nothing was left of me from what he had thought of until the last minute". In his Sefer "Zait Ra’anan" he mentions him many times and brings.his questions. In 1878, twelve years after the passing of his rabbi the "Zeit Ra’anan", Rabbi Hirsch Michal became close to Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin, who at that time immigrated to Eretz Israel. Rabbi Hirsch Michal was one of his few students and became his confidant.
In 1877 the Sephardic sages wanted to strengthen waking up at minight to recite Tikkun Chatzot, they turned to Rabbi Hirsch Michal (who had never passed midnight in his sleep) to write articles reinforcing the matter. So he composed his treatise "Tikun Chatzot" which was written in Sephardic style of writing in order to hide its authorship
Rabbi Hirsch Michal was one of the saints and Holy men of Jerusalem, whom Maharil Diskin used to send to be blessed by him and his grave is known as a place capable of salvation, shidducim and healing. As the well-known letter of Rabbi Yaakov Edelstein zt”l.
On his tombstone it is written "…A holy and pure man, Chasid and a humble man who spendt nights and days studying niglah & nistar. With dedication he raised many students and many souls returned home. All his ways were hidden and he never accepted any rule. The Gaon & distinct genius, the brave in the depths of Halacha Tzadik Yesod Haolam Tefarat Daraa Kadisha as the Kevod Shem Thorato Yehoshua Zvi Michal Zatzukal. A distinct student of the great genius Marana Baal Zeit Ra’anan…"
Among his students, his only son, Rabbi Ben-Zion Abraham Shapira, who is considered by his own to a holy man and walked in the ways of his great father, and even became known as one of the greatest Kabbalists in the Beit a-L Yeshiva. Another famous student of him was Rabbi Ya’akov Moshe Harlap, who was treated as a man of G-d. After his passing, he published his history in the book "Zvi Tzaddik." Rabbi Haralp dealt with the writings of Rabbi Hirsch Michal and published his holy books – Questions and Answers in Halacha , Amarot Tehorot – Moral Articles, and Zvi Tzadik – Collection of Rabbi Shapira’s Letters to His Students, Including Strengthening and Moral and Guidance in G-d’s Work.
Overall Fair condition. some stains, marginal tears affecting text in some areas, pages are loose, some pages have tape repairs, text block detached from binding , original binding damaged, comes in a later leather casing.
