Silver tray with Hebrew inscription dated 1858 presented by the members of the ‘Menachem Aveilim’ society of the Waag-Neustadtl community to their Rabbi Yosef Weisse.

Rabb Yosef Weisse was born in Plumenau in 1812. He attended Rabbi David Buchheim’s Talmud school in Kojetein. In Prague he completed a pedagogical and academic degree together with Moritz Steinschneider and Rabbi Leopold Löw .

In 1837 Weisse became a teacher at the community school in Prossnitz , and in 1841 headmaster in Prerau. Later he became rabbi in Kosteletz (Bohemia), 1845 Rabbi in Gaya (Moravia). He belonged to the Committee for Moravian-Jewish Affairs with Abraham Placzek and three community leaders. In 1855 he became rabbi in Waag-Neustadtl. He founded a Jewish secondary school there. He passed away there in 1897.

Engraved with 3 names, the third one being Rabbi Zalman Wolf Freund. Born in Waag-Neustadtl in 1820, he later served as Rabbi of Landstrasse near Vienna untill his passing in 1905.

Marked on bottom of tray in center of dedication.

Great condition, old repair on bottom corner.
