The Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Leib Karlburg was born in 1765 or 1775, to Rabbi Mordechai and Esther Karlburg. He studied with the Gaon Rabbi Meir Barbi in Pressburg and with the Gaon Rabbi Natan Adler in Frankfurt. He also studied in yeshiva in Prague at the end of Rabbi Yehezkel Landau’s days and in Berlin.
From 1793 he worked as a private teacher in Bonn. In 1803 he was appointed second rabbi in Bonn, probably alongside Rabbi Simcha Bonim Kahana Rappaport, rabbi of the city at the time. In 1806, when Napoleon Bonaparte summoned the "Assembly of the Honorable Jews", he feared its results and held prayers and fasts because of it. Later, he was invited to the Great Sanhedrin in Paris, but could not participate because of an eye disease he had. Later he became blind in one eye. In 1809 he was elected the chief rabbi of Krefeld, and as the head of the district consistory, where he served until his death in 1835.
