The Holy Gaon Rabbi Nachum Rabbi Levi of Shadik (1933-1889), son of Rabbi Moshe Avraham Poizner Rabbi of Seleshin. He studied under the Chemdat Shlomo who was from the geniuses of Poland.
When he reached the age of 18, his rebbi gave him Semicha. He served for several years as rabbi of Shadik (Szadek), Poland, and for that reason he was called "Rabbi Nahum Shadikar" until the end of his life. He was a genius, Chasid and a Porush.
In 1843, he immigrated to the Land of Israel together with his two rabbinic brothers, Rabbi Asher La’amal Abed Galin and Rabbi Yaakov Yehuda Leib, after all three of them dreamed that night that they should immigrate to the Land of Israel, without one knowing about the other’s dream. He would sit in Jerusalem most of his days wrapped and decorated with a tallit and tefillin and study very diligently through fasting. He founded the "Yishivat Haran" where he gave scholarly lessons to the great students of the young sages in Jerusalem. He studied the Secret Torah, together with the tzaddik Rabbi Yosef Zondel of Salant, under the Kabbalist Rabbi Yehuda HaCohen.
Rabbi Ya’akov Sapir Halevi wrote about him, "It is not in excessive language that it is said about the holy Hasid Rabbi Rabbi Nahum Zotzkal that he equaled about sixty thousand, and in righteousness he could hold up his ten fingers, and say openly and well known, etc., that I did not enjoy this world, etc…. He was like the one who grew stronger with sharpness and knowledge, and the extent of his Hassidic celibacy and holiness, I will not know from beginning to end, nor will he cover many pages… Liit Din Bar Nash only from the sons of Elakim, the sons of Elyon, who also went gentile As Tarshish… and what can I say about the kindness of his heart and the beauty of his eyes, he was kind to the poor and merciful… he did not eat his bread alone.."
He died in the cholera epidemic in 1869. In the letter in which Rabbi Meir Auerbach announced the passing of Rabbi Nahum, he writes: "Woe to me that I have come to such a time to see an actual Torah book that was burned because he did not leave anyone like him… He sat all day wrapped in a tallit and tefillin on the Torah and Avodah… and the persistence of his study was as amazing as darkness as a light, and with joy and kindness he served God at all times and moments with devotion."
On his tombstone on the Mount of Olives it is written: "A holy and pure man, at the age of eight he began to demand God and dedicated all his days to the Torah and austerities and sacrifices with self-sacrifice. He did not stop studying day and night. He was privileged to learn and teach and made many students… a devout and humble…"
