The Gaon Rabbi Yisroel Segal [Wahrmann] was born in Altofen (Obuda) to his father Rabbi Shlomo in 1755.

He was a disciple of Rabbi Elazar Kalir Av Beis Din of Rechnitz author of Or Chadash, Rabbi Meir Barabi Av Beis Din of Pressburg and Rabbi Zerach Eidlitz of Prague. He served as Rabbi of Bodrogkeresztúr after 1785, and from 1796 as Rabbi of Pest and was the first officially recognized rabbi of the community, which developed rapidly under his leadership, its first statutes being drafted at his instance. He passed away there in 1826.
