A  fascinating letter that entrusts two emissaries from the Zsámbék community to negotiate with the main community in Óbuda-Pest, about the sum of ‘Tolerance Monies’ that in those days every Jewish community had to pay protection money to the local Graf.

The Gaon Rabbi Reuven Rakonitz was the son of Rabbi Ari’ Yehuda Leib Raoknitz [died 1753 and laid in the old Beit Chayim in Pressburg]. He was a close student of the Gaon the Noda B’yehuda.

He served as rabbi of Urmín [Mojmírovce] (unsure), from the year 1777-1751 he served as Rabbi of Veszprém, and from there he was appointed Rabbi of Zsámbék until his death in about 1819.

He was the brother-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Yitzhak Karuv Abd Papa.
