The Gaon Rabbi Yosef Elimelech Kahana was born in 1866 in Rudnawitz. His father was Rabbi Yitzchak Isak Kahana was the Av Beit Din in Zsadány and his father-in-law was Rabbi Yitzchak Isak Billitzer. He studied under his father and father-in-law, and was also a student of Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Manheimer and Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfreid, author of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch.

He served as the rabbi in Hernad-Zsadány, Bonyhád, and Deutschkreuz, and from 1932 was the Av Beit Din of Ungvar.

His rabbinical period was a period of flourishing for the Ungהar community. He worked hard to establish community institutions, such as a hospital and a soup kitchen, and to strengthen Torah study and preserve the tradition of Israel. To that end, he set up a company called "Torah Students, " which organized evening classes for people who worked during the day. He also served as president of the Rabbinical Committee of Carpathian Russia, which coordinated the Orthodox communities in the region. Maintained good relations with the Czechoslovak authorities and clergy in his city, which contributed to the restraint of anti-Semitism.

Upon his election as rabbi of the city, he was appointed president of the Kolel Schomre Hachomot, who supported the poor and Torah scholars in Jerusalem. He Perished in Auschwitz in 1944 Hy”d.

Among his famous disciples was the Gaon Maran Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Wosner.
