Flyleaf with nice inscription ”This sefer belongs to my father the Rabbi the famous world reknown Gaon Moreinu David Halevi Ish Horwitz of Frankfurt, now serving here in the holy community of F”k. Sunday the 8th day of Tamuz 1815”
The Gaon Rabbi Elazar was born the first day of Shvat 1804, when he wrote this inscription on the 8th of Tamuz 1815 he was only 11 years old!
The Gaon Rabbi David Heschel HaLevi Horowitz, was the son of he Gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Halevi Horwitz, rabbi of Frankfurt & author of Machneh Levi. Son-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Elazar Kalirm rabbi of Kolin & author of Or Chadash.
From 1800 he served as rabbi of Floß, & from 1813 as rabbi of Frauenkirchen until his passing in 1825.
His son the Gaon Rabbi Elazar Halevi Horwitz was born on Jan-14-1804 in Floß. from 1821-1825 he studied in Pressburg under Maran the Chasam Sofer. On the behest of the Chasam Sofer he accepted the rabbinate of Vienna in 1829. A position he held until his death. He was in charge of Judaism and waged an uncompromising war on religion. He passed away in 1868. His Responsa were published in the Sefer "Yad Elazar".
Afterwards the sefer passed on to the Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Gordon of Southport who wrote many marginal glosses. Most of the glosses are signed & dated, one of them clearly in Southport.
Rabbi Yaakov Gordon, born in Lithuania, settled in England, first in Manchester, and later in Bournemouth and Southport. A wealthy Talmudic scholar who corresponded with leading rabbinical figures of his time and is mentioned in many contemporary rabbinic periodicals and responsa collections.
