Classic Americana Wooden Decalogue, Circa 1900
Classic Americana Wooden Decalogue, Circa 1900 Entirely carved by hand, this Decalogue would have been placed over the ark in an American synagogue. The scroll-work and feathers are strikingly similar to 19th century carved wooden "American Eagle" plaques that were patriotic in nature, which are highly collectible today by American Folk Art enthusiasts, including museums.

A Gilded Silver Torah Shield, London 1929
A Gilded Silver Torah Shield, London 1929 This bold, austere Torah shield is sterling silver and then gold-washed (gilt). It has a set of English hallmarks on the bottom of the front of the shield. There is a very long dedication for who this Torah shield was donated to the synagogue in memory of, the Hebrew engraving was expertly done by the same person who engraved the Ten Commandments. It is a very "restrained" design, as opposed to the American Torah shields of this era.

Large Silver Torah Pointer, Austria, Circa 1920
Large Silver Torah Pointer, Austria, Circa 1920 Although made in Austria before World War Two, this silver Torah pointer has a very modern look, likely adopted from the Jugendstil art movement in Vienna. At some point after this Torah pointer was acquired, bands of acanthus leaf decoration was engraved, an obvious attempt to give this pointer an "older look", that of 19th century Austrian Torah pointers. A curious juxtaposition!

A Silver Kiddush Cup, Poland, Mid 19th Century
A Silver Kiddush Cup, Poland, Mid 19th Century This somewhat crude little cup is entirely hand made, and bears the famous "12" hallmark of the Ukraine and parts of Poland. 12 cups were favored among Jews for kiddush cups, and this has a charming, naive depiction of a lion on it, perhaps referencing the name of the owner "Aryeh", or as a "Lion of Judah".

A Silver Kiddush Cup, Poland 1925
A Silver Kiddush Cup, Poland 1925 This kiddush beaker bears hallmarks for the Russian Empire, including "84", which was the Russian standard of silver (84 out of a possible 96 "zlotnik"). It appears this was originally decorated in the method of bright-cut engraving during the late 19th century, and was then later re-dedicated in 1925 with wriggle-work engraving that includes Cyrillic initials in the shield cartouche and a pair of birds flanking a Star of David.
