This pewter dish was engraved to give with food to a friend on Purim. The outer rim references this from the Esther scroll "…of gladness and feasting, and of sending portions to his friend…". The center has a scene of Haman leading Mordechai on horseback and it is titled as such.
The inner rim has a very lengthy dedication that states who hired the engraver to decorate this pewter dish, including the full names of a husband and wife, the "Yiddish-ized" names of the cities or villages in Germany they came from, and finally, the Hebrew date of 1768. In the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, there a pewter Purim dish that features a center scene of Haman leading Mordechai on horseback that is similar to the one seen on the dish we are offering
