A very warm letter discussing raising funds for his Yeshiva ‘Torat Eretz Yisrael’ & the general Talmud Torah he formed in Tzfat.
The Gaon Rabbi Yaakov David Vilavsky (1845-1913) was born in Kobrin and was renowned from a young age as an infant prodigy. At the age of 23 he was appointed Rabbi of Izbalin, from where he was appointed Darshan in Vilna and subsequently Rabbi of Bobruisk, Polotsk, Vilkovisk, Slutzk and Chicago. Renowned as an outstanding and outspoken rabbinic scholar. In 1905 he settled in Eretz Yisrael and established a Yeshiva in Tzfat. Author of many rabbinic works, most famous of which is his commentary on the Talmud Yerushalmi.
