Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Twersky (1794-1876) was the third son of Rabbi Mordechai of Chernobyl. On his mother’s side, he was the grandson of Rabbi Aharon Hagadol of Karlin. In 1834 when he settled in the city of Hornosteipel he turned the city into a great Chassidic center and thousands of Chassidim flooded to him. He served as rabbi of the city for 26 years. In 1860 he moved to the adjacent city of Cherkasy.
