Rabbi Chaim Elazar Wachs (1826-1889), among Torah giants of his generation and leaders of Jewry of Poland.
Served as rabbinate of Tarnogród, Kalush, and Piotrkow, he was mainly known as “Rabbi of Kalisz”, and later by the name of his Sefer Nefesh Chaya’.
He was the son-in-law of the Ga’on Rabbi Yehoshua of Kutna author of ‘Yeshu’ot Malko’ and together were active for the benefit of the settlement of Eretz Israel.
From 1869 he served as president of Poland Kollel for the poverty-stricken Eretz Israel and even purchased plots of land and village of Chitin near Tiberias, they planted orchards of citrons, in order to establish an economic basis for Jewish settlement in Eretz Israel.
Among his famous disciples: Rabbi Meir Dan Plotsky Av Beit Din of Devhart author of Kli Chemda.
