A clock for traveling that is so small it almost could be considered a miniature, in it’s original attached pebbled leather case. In gilt lettering the case in marked "London Conference 1939".
The London Conference took place between February 7th and March 17th of 1939. This assembly was called for by the British government, to plan the future of Palestine and to end the Mandate. The proposals presented to both Jews/Zionists and Arab delegations were met with refusals and protests, and the conference ultimately failed. Because of it’s failure, this led to the infamous "White Paper of 1939", which was widely rejected by Zionists. After the horrors of World War Two and the British abandonment of the Mandate on May 15, 1948, the State of Israel came into being, just nine years after the failed London Conference.
This clock apparently was given to some Jewish or Arab delegates who attended the London Conference. We are not aware of other examples of this London Conference clock, including in the collections of the British Museum, the Jewish Museum of London, or the Israel Museum.
