The Holy Gaon Rabbi Menachem Brody of Kalov (1862-1938) was the son-in-law of the Holy Admor Rebbi Meshulam Feisch Segal Levi, the first Admor of Tosh chassidus. He served as Rabbi in his father-in-law’s city, and then served as rabbi of Kalov, where he established a yeshiva gedolah where around 300 students learned at any one time. Over the years he had thousands of students, including great scholars. Students of his who survived the Shoah told of his holy practices, prayer, strength of Torah, and holiness. His student Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Gross wrote a long introduction in his book “Beer Menachem” in which he details stories from his rav.
Rabbi Shalom Yosef Spitzer of Füzesgyarmat. was born in Udvary in 1913 to his father Rabbi Eliyahu. He studied at the Yeshiva of the Holy Be’er Menachem in Kalov. He married the daughter of R. Yitzchak Menachem Greenberger of Makova. They lived in his ancestral residence in the village of Füzesgyarmat.
He Died in a labor camp in 1945 Hy”d.
His wife, Mrs. Alta Shlima, was saved with her son and two daughters, and later married Rabbi Hillel Lichtenstein zt”l Ab”d Krasna. who together with her raised her children with the devotion of a faithful father.
