A lovely antique sterling silver grape holder, a unique piece of serving ware that was commonly used in fine dining settings during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The holder features a central stem with hooks at the top, designed to hang bunches of grapes, which was a stylish and convenient way to serve grapes at the table.
The stylish handle is adorned with vine leaves and a grape cluster motif, a common theme in decorative silverware representing nature and abundance. Bunches of grapes can be suspended from the ornate arms, allowing guests to pluck them easily. A tall center stem rises from the center dome of the lower tray similarly decorated and shaped with twisting vine and floral elements.
Grape scissors are included in the piece, originally made sperate from the stand, typically used to neatly cut grapes from the bunch, preventing guests from pulling them apart by hand.
Standing on four ball feet, the base is beautifully crafted in the shape of large realistic grape leaves, adding an organic element and providing space to catch any stray grapes or juice.
Such holders were common in European households, particularly in France and England, and they reflect the refined table manners of that era making it not only functional but also a statement of luxury and style.
