Letter of recommendation on behalf of Rabbi Shalom Shmuel Sigler. Bnei Brak, 1975.
The Holy Rebbe Rabbi Eliezer Zusia Portugal of Skulen (1897-1982), son and successor of Rabbi Yisrael Avraham, the Av Beit Din of Skulen, dedicated himself to saving Polish refugees during the Holocaust. After the war, he lived in Bucharest and risked his life to uphold Judaism in Communist Romania. His home became a refuge for dozens of orphans whom he saved from government indoctrination, later helping them escape to other countries. During this time, the Communist authorities arranged a "Melave Malka" event to show a positive facade of Jewish life to visiting dignitaries from outside the Iron Curtain, forcing rabbis to speak publicly about the supposed good conditions for Jews in Romania. The Skulen Rebbe, claiming he was unable to give a speech, instead composed and performed a song for the event. An accomplished composer, he created his famous melody for verses from Psalms (Chapter 79): "Let it be known among the nations in our sight, the vengeance of the blood of Your servants that has been shed. Let the sighing of the prisoner come before You; according to the greatness of Your power, preserve those doomed to die. And return to our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, with which they have reproached You, O Lord." Through this song, he subtly conveyed to the world the true plight of Jews behind the Soviet Iron Curtain.
After eventually escaping himself, he arrived in the United States, where he became known for his remarkable righteousness and extensive charitable deeds, establishing a network of orphanages and educational institutions under "Chesed L’Avraham – Skulen."
