The famous Holy Rebbi Yeshaya of Kerestir. The Meshamesh of the Holy Rebbi Tzvi Hirsch of Liska. The following was written on his portrait, which was published after his passing: A good-hearted man, who loved all creation and pitied the poor and the needy, a holy Tzaddik Rav … modest and Chassid, true and loyal… a wonder-worker, whose house was like that of Avraham Avinu, one of a kind, the Rav of Yisroel Rabbeinu Yeshaya Steiner. Passed away on the third of Iyar 1925.
Known by all as “Reb Shaya’le Kerestirer, ” He was renowned as a pillar of charity and kindness. His home was open to all; he hosted many guests at his meals and distributed large sums to charity. He was a close disciple of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Liska and was ordained by the Admorim of Sanz and Nadvorna. His name spread far and wide as a holy miracle-worker, bringing thousands to his door for help and salvation. To this day, thousands of Jews flock to his grave to pray for help, guidance and salvation.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Kahana of Kerestir & Humenné was a grandson of the Orchos Chaim of Spinka and son-in-law of Rabbi Avremele, son of Rabbi Yeshayale of Kerestir. His wedding took place in Kerestir in 1922, following which he remained to live near his holy father-in-law and grandfather for three years until Rabbi Yeshayale’s passing in 1925.The famous Holy Rebbi Yeshaya of Kerestir.
Rabbi Yosef Mordechai Gintzler (circa 1900 – 1956) was the son of Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac, who was a close aide of our holy Rebbi Yeshayah of Kerestir. His grandfather, Rabbi Avraham Hersh Gintzler, was already close to great figures such as the holy Rebbi Meir of Premishlan, the holy Rebbi of Liska, and the "Yismach Moshe."
Rabbi Yosef Mordechai was orphaned in his childhood and studied in the yeshivas in Kerestir. He was deeply devoted to Rabbi Yeshayah, and due to his great attachment, even after Rabbi Yeshayah’s passing, he authored the sefer "Mei Be’er Yeshayahu, " which details the life of his teacher. Additionally, he authored "Darkei Yam Suf" on the Torah. After the war, in 1948, he was appointed as the rabbi of the city of Kerestir, succeeding Rabbi Yissachar Berish who had left the city, thus becoming the last known rabbi of the renowned Kerestir. He passed away on the 29th of Tishrei, 1956, and was buried in Kerestir in the first row next to the grave of his holy teacher, as per his will. His tombstone begins with the verse: "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one…" Additionally, he requested that his coffin be made from the table at which he diligently studied all his days…
