The Gaon Rabbi Moshe Hertzfeld [1816–1872] served as the Av Beit Din of Szilasbalhás (today Mezőszilas), Hungary, for approximately 25 years. He was one of the leading disciples of the Chatam Sofer and his son, the Ktav Sofer. He was the son-in-law of the Av Beit Din of Pressburg, Rabbi Daniel Prosstitz. He resided near his father-in-law in Pressburg, and in 1849 he returned to his birthplace, Mühldorf, before being appointed in 1856 as Av Beit Din of Szilas-Balaș, where he served until his passing. His son-in-law and successor was Rabbi Avraham Zvi Klein, Av Beit Din of Szilasbalhás. Another son-in-law was Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Beitum, Av Beit Din of Mühlendorf (Chatam Sofer u’Talmidav, p. 448).
The Ktav Sofer wrote of his esteemed disciple: "…[Rabbi Hertsfeld] is sharp and outstanding, and it is said of him that he is one of the esteemed and distinguished scholars of our yeshiva. He drank from the well that served many holy congregations. Moshe, without pause, served my revered father, may his memory be a blessing, for several years, and found favor and good sense in his eyes. He rose and distinguished himself through his dedication, gaining sharpness and expertise in the complexities of the Talmud and its laws… The speaker in honor of the Torah, and in honor of a seasoned and wise student. Sunday, the 21st of Adar 1841, here in Pressburg, may it be established and endure, signed Avraham Shmuel Binyamin the son of the illustrious Rabbi Moshe Sofer of blessed memory” (Kerem Shlomo, Vol. 9, Collection 4, pp. 42-43).
