Rabbi Eliezer Papo [1786-1828], author of Pele Yo’etz, served as rabbi of Silistra, Bulgaria. His son writes: "He afflicted himself astonishingly by fasting, and flogging each and every night in which supplications [תחנונים] are recited. Sackcloth and ashes, thorns and immersions … and snow-immersion." He was known as a wonder-worker. Just prior to his passing away, he declared that anyone who prostrates himself at his grave after ritual immersion, recital of psalms and prayer with intent – will be granted salvation and mercy. Kabbalist Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto conducts annual mass pilgrimage to his grave site in Bulgaria, accompanied by wealthy tycoons and influential leaders.
