The great Gaon & Tzadik Rabbeinu Moshe Schick the ‘Maharam Schick’ [1807-1879] the greatest disciple of Maran the Chasam Sofer. The Rav of Chust and Rosh Yeshiva of its large yeshiva. His Rav, the Chasam Sofer, said of him that he was ‘Mainer Seforim Shafeh’ [My bookcase]. His Pesakim were accepted admiringly in Austro-Hungary and then in the entire Jewish world. In addition, he was the indisputable leader of Hungary Jewry of his generation. Authored renowned innovations on the Shas and Shur.

Harav Moshe Schick (1807-1879), renowned as Maharam Schick, was a leading disciple of the Chasam Sofer who perpetuated his legacy in Hungary. He taught many great disciples and his contemporary Rabbanim all accepted his halachic rulings. Maharam Schick was appointed to the rabbinate in Yargen in the year 1838 upon the recommendation of the Chasam Sofer who would occasionally vacation in Yargen and listen to his student teach Torah. The Chasam Sofer extolled him with praises, and his students likewise attested that his humility rivaled that of Rabbi Akiva Eiger.

“He lived by the Torah of his rebbi the Chasam Sofer and never delivered a Torah discourse without first mentioning the teachings of the Chasam Sofer.”
