Very important letter, a invitation from the Holy Belzer Rebbe to a gathering of Rabbonim to fight the decrees of the Polish government concerning the election of Rabbis of the communities.

As is well known, letters with his handwriting & signature from ‘Belz Inderheim’ are exceedingly rare!

The custom of the Rebbe was to pen a line as if to erase on the characters ‘Amalek’ (עמלק) as is evident in the present letter in his Holy hand.

Many blessings and greetings to my Holy cousin , the righteous and well-known Rabbi, of the lineage of Yuchsin, Crown of Israel, lMaran HaRav Yisrael Shlit”a

Recently, I received your letter. as to the community elections some parts will be a change for the better, but others are delicate matters that can harm the Holy Community, such as questions about the selection of Rabbis and more. Therefore, it is necessary for us to hold a meeting of Rabbis as a council on this matter. There is hope that through the organization of Rabbis, we will be able to act for the good of our brethren in all matters.

I request of my Holy cousin Shlit”a, , to make an effort to strengthen the Holy Community and write to the Rabbis, asking them to come together on a agreed upon day to join us in one organization. Due to the urgent need for these matters, it is important that this letter be addressed as soon as possible, and may God help us conclude for the good.

Hakatan Ahron Of Belz

The famous Holy Maran Rebbe Aharon Rokeach of Belz (1880-1957), son of Rebbe Yissaschar Dov and grandson of Rebbe Yehoshua of Belz, was renowned as a holy man and miracle worker, who was called “Aharon, G-d’s holy one”. He was among the leaders of European Jewry before the Holocaust, as well as a rebuilder of Torah and Chassidut after the war. His ascetic lifestyle and obvious holiness caused thousands of followers to flock to his court for blessings and advice.

Rebbe Aharon was crowned as leader of the Belz Chassidut in 1927, and became one of the foremost leaders of Eastern European Jewry. As such, he was especially targeted by the Nazis during the Holocaust. His followers smuggled him from ghetto to ghetto, until he managed to escape to Budapest, Hungary, from where he made his way to Eretz Israel on a difficult journey that spanned Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and Syria. His wife, children, grandchildren and entire extended family were killed by the Nazis, and he arrived in Eretz Israel accompanied only by his brother, Rebbe Mordechai of Bilgoraj, who also lost his entire family (R. Mordechai’s son, Rebbe Yissaschar Dov, born of his second marriage in Eretz Israel, is the current Belzer Rebbe). Rebbe Aharon settled in Tel Aviv, where he began to rebuild the shattered remnants of his chassidut.

The Holy Rebbe Yisroel Freidman of Chortkov [1854-1934] the son of Rebbe David Moshe of Chortkov and the son-in-law of his uncle the Holy Rebbe Avraham Yaakov of Sadigura, who were each, the sons of the Holy Rebbe Yisroel of Ruzhyn. His mother was the daughter of the Holy Rebbe Aharon of Chernobyl.

Thousands came to his court, headed by leading rabbis, Poskim and Geonim, such as Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin, and Rabbi Meir Arik of Tarnow. Due to the upheavals of World War I, the Rebbe left Galicia and re-established his court in Vienna.

He was one of the founders of the worldwide Agudas Yisroel, which he saw as a way to raise the crown of the Torah and Jewry everywhere and bring Klal Yisroel closer to their Father in Heaven. He served as president of Mo’etzes Gedolei HaTorah.
